onboarding research

This is a project that I worked on for Skyweaver a web 3 card trading game. I worked on this project from March 2023 to May 2023.

Problem

Horizon Blockchain Games identified some issues with their game onboarding process. They needed in-depth research in order to come up with actionable insights.

Solution

I used Maze, Notion and Figjam in order to run a usability test, a competitive analysis and an impact vs effort workshop.

research goals
  • Finding friction points in the onboarding flow for core tasks.

  • Finding opportunities to optimize UI and user flows.

Core questions
  • How hard is it to interact with the game mode menu?

  • How hard is it to purchase items?

  • How hard is it to create and edit decks?

Testing pool

We ordered a panel of 20 Eglish speaking users between the ages of 18-35 based in the US based on data analytics on our core user.

maze testing

Together with the Head of Design I devised a usability test comprised of 7 missions and 3 survey questions to better understand any friction during the onboarding process.

organization

The information was organized in an overview and then went into a detailed analysis of the stats from surveys and missions.

recommendations

each mission was followed by general recommendations based on the registered results.

test result reporting

I organized and synthesized the test results in Notion so that they would be easily accessible to the whole team.

actionable insights

Based on the recommendations in the Testing Report I guided the team through defining a series of actionable insights.

Prioritization

We placed the actionable insights that the team preferred on an impact/effort matrix which then informed their prioritization.

Together with key team members from the Product Development team, I ran each mission result and recommendation through an impact/effort matrix.

milestones

I marked important milestones throughout the flows in order to understand the differences in onboarding between competitors.

detailed notes

I made sure detailed notes of each step are recorded for better comparison between user experiences.

user flow mapping

I analyzed and mapped the onboarding flows of the main Skyweaver competitors: Hearthstone, Legends of Runeterra, Marvel Snap, and Magic Arena.

comparison

I highlighted similarities and differences in the onboarding flows in a colour-coded document.

benefits

The team was able to use this final document to highlight any weaknesses Skyweaver might have in comparison to its competitors.
